A family heirloom came into my hands on Father's Day...and with it, an unexplained curiosity.
This is a machete, which my son had mounted and framed, that was owned by my late great-grandfather. He came to the United States from Sweden in about 1897, settled in upper Michigan, but found employment in the sugar cane fields of Cuba. There, he acquired and used this tool.
See the handle? There are notches carefully carved in there. Look closely:
So..what do you suppose the notches signify?
