Thanks for Making Wishes Come True!
Saturday 03-12-2011 6:04am PT

The recent Make a Wish 2011 Radiothon was a huge success thanks to your generosity. If you received one of my pies with your donation--and 12 of you did!--I'll be in contact with you soon or reach me here at K103 by email.

Santa Visits Albina Early Headstart in Portland!
Monday 12-20-2010 7:53pm PT

First of all---THANK YOU VERY MUCH
to the many K103 listeners
who 'adopted' the wishlists of 103 toddlers and babies
in the Albina Early Headstart program in Portland.
You did the work---searching for and shopping for the toys and clothes the children wanted and needed.
The Albina staff helped Santa Claus out by wrapping the presents you delivered to the Early Headstart centers.
 And then on Friday Santa,
and his wife Mrs. Claus,
arrived to hand the presents out to each and every child.
I was fortunate to be there and see the children
meet Santa one by one and to receive their bag of gifts provided by you.
Here are some of the photos from Santa's visit:

The children were so excited to have Santa in their midst.  (just a note: Santa is a K103 listener. I mean it!)

I love this next photo...notice the little boy sneeking a peek at Santa.

And THEN, when that same little boy got his time to be with Santa he was over-the-top excited about it!

Thank you.
Happy holidays to you.
Bakestravaganza!
Monday 12-13-2010 7:37am PT

I have entered many pies through the years at county fairs, and watched nervously while the judges took bites to decide how my particular mix of (insert fruit), sweetener and crust all came together...
but last week I was on the other side of the fence working as a judge for the 5th annual Bakestravaganza's 'Mini Cupcake' contest.
Did I just use the word 'working' to describe my judging duties?
Okay. Wow.
Wrong verb.
I was 'tasting' a dozen delightful cupcake creations that were placed in front of me:

The Bakestravaganza is a creation of the folks who work in the Portland Public School's Budget Office, and it is their annual fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank.
No laughing...the Budget Office 'bakers' raised $2,200  this year from their one day event!

Back to my judging duties...
I was joined on each side by fellow judges Ariane Hopman from the Oregon Food Bank and Roger Schierburg, the retired manager of the school administration's cafeteria.  We dug in to those cupcakes, one cake at a time, taking notes on their appearance, texture, and flavor.

After trying the first 3 cupcakes, I knew I better develop some kind of  'system' to keep track of which one was the best. I resorted to stars:
1 star--not worth the calories;
2 stars--the cupcake is okaaaaay, but nothing to write home about;
3 stars--hey, this is good, but maybe something better is around the corner;
and 4 stars---ohmygosh...heaven in a mini cupcake!
Not one single cupcake received a 1-or even 2-star rating. They were all 3 and 4-star cupcakes!
But the winner of the Golden Whisk award went to
Chips Galore

with wonderful banana cake flavor and moist, satisfying texture...loaded with mini chocolate chips inside
and in the creamy frosting too.
The winning mini cupcakes were baked by former district employee Teri Stonecipher.
Her entry was a lovely presentation of a mini cupcake,
and much better looking than my judging plate afterward!

More Than a Bellringer...
Saturday 12-04-2010 9:34pm PT

So you see Salvation Army bellringers all around town this time of year--but have you heard the singing  bellringer known as 'The Caroler?'

While waiting on a friend for lunch last week I was treated to the sounds of 'The Caroler' as he manned the traditional red kettle.
He really sounded great, singing carols accapella
with his voice bouncing off the building around him.

The kettles and bells have been a part of the Salvation Army since 1891 when the tradition started in San Francisco.
Money dropped in the kettles goes directly to those in need
of shelter, food and energy assistance.
And the Salvation Army bells actually inspired the
very well-known song 'Silver Bells'
The Caroler---aka. Ramsey---told me he has a repertoire
of more than 100 holiday tunes he can choose from as he sings during his
kettle shift, while wearing one of the longest scarves
in the world,
I swear!

I hope you encounter The Caroler this season around Portland.  He is SO into the holiday spirit!

K103 is Helping Santa This Season!
Sunday 11-21-2010 7:19pm PT
K103 has been in early communication with Santa
this holiday season looking over the wishlists
of the 103(!) babies and toddlers at Albina Early Headstart centers in Portland.
We need your help gathering the gifts
which include things like books, warm winter playclothes, coats, baby dolls, cars, trucks and lots of Playdough!
Just like in past years,
you can 'adopt' one or more children and
get the items on their wishlists.

You take your unwrapped gifts to one of
3 Albina Early Headstart centers,
where the children's teachers and caregivers
will wrap them for us.
The gifts need to be delivered by
Monday December 13th at 5 pm--
so we have just 3 weeks to do our Santa work!
Find the wishlists HERE.
After you choose a child (or children!)
email ME and I'll let Santa know who you have chosen.

Albina Early Head Start
began helping babies, toddlers,
and prenatal mothers and families
in 2000 in Portland.
 It is
a comprehensive preschool program
serving children of low income families,
children with special needs
and foster children.
Full day childcare is provided
while parents either
go to school, attend job training or work.

I visited one of the Albina Early Headstart centers
last week to get these photos---
and all of the children were so excited
to be in a picture and see how the camera worked...
like the little girl above who peered right into the lens.

THANK YOU for your help!
