43 drivers were cited for texting while driving.
The Washington County Traffic Safety Unit focused on the intersection of TV Highway and SW 185th Avenue Friday, located in the community of Aloha, concentrating on drivers using mobile communication devices.
This intersection was chosen because it ranks 3rd in hazardous intersections in Washington County. In all, deputies stopped 76 violators and issued 61 citations. Deputies issued 43 citations for using a mobile communication device, 8 citations for seatbelt violations, 2 citations for failure to obey a traffic control device and 1 citation for driving without a driver's license.
In all, 45 people were stopped for talking or texting while driving. Deputies were only able to stop about a third of the violations witnessed as there were more violators spotted while the six motor officers assigned were on other traffic stops.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office encourages drivers to stop using mobile communication devices while driving. Distracted driving is a leading cause of preventable crashes that result in injuries. Complying with traffic laws makes our roads safer for every one who uses them.
The Traffic Safety Unit will continue to focus enforcement missions designed to educate people and encourage them to utilize a Bluetooth or other hands free device. Holding a cell phone in your hand and using the speaker phone is not "Hands Free."
