Brent Klausner is accused of trying to steal a puppy from the Oregon Humane Society.
Portland Police have arrested 36-year-old Brent Klausner in connection with the attempted theft of a puppy from the Oregon Humane Society. Klausner was arrested without incident while at work in Aloha.
The investigation started on January 14, when police were called to the Oregon Humane Society after Klausner attempted to walk out of the shelter with a puppy he'd removed from one of the cages. The employee told police that Klausner broke a lock securing the cage, grabbed the puppy and started to walk towards the counter with the puppy under his coat.
The employee confronted Klausner and he turned over the puppy and left the shelter. Officers contacted Klausner a few blocks away and discussed the incident with him but did not arrest him at that time, instead deciding to consult with the District Attorney's Office and conduct further investigation.
The officers verified his identity, residence and place of employment and released him so they could continue their investigation, which ultimately led to his arrest on Thursday.
The puppy is a terrier mix named "Burkhead" and he has since been adopted from the Oregon Humane Society.
Klausner was charged with Attempted Theft in the First Degree and Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree and booked into the Multnomah County Jail.
