Watch as the Sellwood Bridge is moved 66-feet to the nortn.

Construction crews have successfully moved the Sellwood Bridge 66-feet to the north, so it can be used as a temporary bridge over the Willamette River while a new bridge is built.

The detour bridge has several advantages compared to the original plan, which was to build the new bridge in two phases. The detour bridge approach:
 ¡Saves $5 to $10 million
¡Saves up to one year of construction time
¡Improves safety by separating traffic from bridge construction
¡Reduces environmental impacts (due to less in-water work)
¡Eliminates structural elements needed if bridge is built in two phases.

The 3400-ton truss span will be one of the longest bridge parts ever moved.  The age and shape of the truss combined with the curved path of the move make it a highly complex undertaking.

Commuters seeking alternate routes caused heavier than normal traffic on McLoughin Boulevard and I-205 southbound.
