A new market takes "local" to the next step

A new family market at the corner of Northwest 9th and Everett in Portland opens soon with an idea the family hopes others will take a cue from.

"This is the meat and seafood department..."

Megan Bruning is showing me around Local Choice Market - a converted garage - her husband works here - her mother and father - came up with the idea for a traditional neighborhood place.

Don Sader says its a market - not a store.  He asks "do you purposely go and hang out at fred meyer, safeway or wherever.  No. You go there because you need bread, eggs, milk, whatever.  But a market is more of an experience where you go because you want to go there."

Everything about the store is local...the food - wine - beer - from local producers or distributors. "Our number one priority is to get foods as close, as local as they can be. If we could grow everything on the roof of our market and sell it here we would."

And everything from plumbing to i-t services - done by local contractors.  Sader hopes other businesses copy his model.
