Was the new mayor a legal candidate?
Portland mayor-elect Charlie Hales is already picking his staff...but now some voters are saying - wait just a minute.
The question came up as the city council considered accepting the county elections report saying Charlie Hales had won the job of mayor.
Catherine Lambert objected saying "Charlie Hales was not a legally qualified voter when he filed an application for that position. Therefore he was not a legally qualified candidate."
But city elections official Deborah Scoggins told the council. "We did receive a complaint back in April regarding mayor-elect Hales residency and voter registration. It was investigated by the elections officer then and determined by the county elections division that he was a qualified voter at the time he filed."
There is still the possibility of a lawsuit to block Hales taking office.
