Roger Fink is a Health Teacher at Liberty High School and Hillsboro Online Academy. His nominator and student, Kat Pedersen, had this to say about Mr. Fink:
Mr. Fink is a teacher who’s not only very hilarious, but also generally caring and accepting. He's accepting of anyone and everyone, regardless of their background or personal self. He shows this in class, while also opening up the minds of his students. His way of teaching isn't to suppress the ideas of the students and tell them they're off limits, so that the student won't rebel and want it more. He will give alternatives and ways to go about things more responsibly, and encourages safety and good behavior. Many people have come to him for advice, and he's the one teacher that doesn't judge you and wants to help. He's a very talented teacher as well! Mr. Fink has done very kind things for people in the past. He even took on the care of one of his students after he had a bad home life, and took him in as a son. I think Mr. Fink deserves all the praise he gets.
Congratulations Roger Fink from all of us at K103!
Luann Lee is a Science Teacher at Newberg High School's, Silver School. She is also a Nationally Board Certified Teacher in Science with a Doctorate in Science Education. Her nominator, Melody McMaster, is a parent and this is what she has to say about Luann:
Luann Lee is more than just a teacher. She has been described as a "second mom". She is a dedicated chemistry teacher who makes herself available to her students at all times. Luann is willing to have study sessions before and after school. She even had study sessions available to students during Spring Break. My son Spencer, says he can’t think of another teacher who works harder to have her students be successful than Mrs. Lee. Not only does she care about her student’s being academically successful, she is willing to look after their well-being too. Spencer says she will never give up on a student. If a student does not bring paper to work with, she will supply them with some. If they do not have a writing utensil, she will make sure you get one. She will sit down with you during the time that she is not required to and make sure that you understand what you need to for you to exceed in her class along with others as well. If someone doesn't have time to eat breakfast or there is no food in their house, Mrs. Lee always has a snack for them whether they are a student in her class or not. Mrs. Lee is truly a devoted teacher and she deserves to be the K103 Educator of the Week.
Congratulations Luann Lee from all of us at K103!
Ken Blacksmith is a Science Teacher at Milwaukie Academy of the Arts Charter School. This is what his nominator and parent, Penney Ryland had to say about Ken:
Mr. Blacksmith is one of the most dedicated teacher's I’ve had the pleasure to meet. He consistently provides extra help to those students that need it and does this on his own time. He has a wonderful demeanor and is very well respected and liked by students and colleagues. Everyday after school, Mr. Blacksmith stays after his "normal" work hours to help kids that are in need of extra help. Mr. Blacksmith is a Science teacher however he will help kids with other subjects as well. Mr. Blacksmith has a website called "Biology is cool" and I believe his Philosophy of Education that is listed on that website sums up why he is deserving of Educator of the week:
"I was in a school classroom prepared to observe the interaction between the students and their teacher when suddenly, the nearest student turned in his chair, and without any prompting, shook his head in his hands and hit his head on the desktop. His message was loud as he exclaimed, “I HATE science! We NEVER get to do anything!” I will never forget what he said and how frustrated he behaved. I will never forget how those wise words from a student helped me to clarify my philosophy as a science teacher. In my class the students will do as many things as possible. I believe students learn and take ownership of their science education by active hands-on tasks, projects, discussions and questions. My science classroom will be a place where creativity and invention are recognized and encouraged. It is my goal as a teacher for my students to gain a passion to learn for life. I will be rewarded as a teacher when a student says to me, “Let me show you.”
Tim Taylor, Director of MAA, has this to say about Ken Blacksmith:
